Isaac Newton, scientist and mathematician

Isaac Newton was a scientist and mathematician. He was born in 1642. He invented calculus, a form of math. He also created the theory of color.     People use to think that red was closest to white and blue was closest to  black. They thought of color as a change in amplitude of light waves but Newton discovered that color has to do with change in frequency in when he made white light pass through a triangular prism. When the white light  passed through the prism, a rainbow was created.

When an apple fell on Newton’s head, he got the idea that the force that made the apple fall to the ground is the same force that keeps the earth orbiting the sun. The incident led to his three laws of physics:

*”A body persists its state of rest or of uniform motion unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force.” Newton’s first law is often referred to as the law of inertia.

*”Force equals mass times acceleration (F=ma).” The net force on an object is equal to the mass of the object multiplied by its acceleration.

*”To every action there is an equal and opposite force.”

Newton did not have much interest in any subject except for math, science, and social science. He worked at Cambridge University to earn the money he needed to attend the university because he barely had any money. To save money, he sometimes had to eat the leftovers of other students. He did not receive any awards at Cambridge and was not considered an outstanding student by most of his teachers. After the university temporarily shut down, Newton did many experiments and took notes. When he invented calculus and discovered the basic laws of physics, he was only in his twenties but he did not publish his discoveries until he was in his forties. An astronomer, Edmund Halley forced him to publish his discoveries. Newton accused another man who also invented calculus for copying his work. Two hundred years later, both men were said to have invented calculus.

Newton’s most famous discovery was the Universal Law of Gravitation: gf=G(m*m/r*r).This formula is used to figure out the gravitational force between two objects.

Isaac Newton died in 1727. Some people think that his life was shortened from dealing with mercury in his experiments.
